Discovering her voice as a woman: Safiya Sinclair, a poet from Jamaica


A writer who grew up in Jamaica under the strict supervision of her Rastafarian father has shared with FRANCE 24 her aspiration to narrate her experiences and ensure that people do not just have a superficial view of her country. Safiya Sinclair’s book “How to Say Babylon” has recently been translated into French as “Dire Babylon”. In this book, she recounts her upbringing dominated by her father’s rigid patriarchal beliefs and his determination to shield her from Babylon, or the influences of the Western world. In an interview with us on Perspective, she discussed her new life as a writer and poet.”
