Expert on presidential polls warns: Current situation could be detrimental to Kamala Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris has seen a decline in presidential polls recently, which pollster Frank Luntz attributes to a change in strategy that could lead to her defeat in the election.

In an interview with CNN, Luntz mentioned that Harris experienced a surge in the polls when she focused on why she should be elected president. However, her numbers stagnated when she shifted her focus to being anti-Trump and urging voters to vote against him.

Recent major polls have shown Trump gaining a slight edge over Harris, with less than two weeks left until Election Day. The Wall Street Journal’s poll gave Trump a 2% lead over Harris, a reversal from August when Harris was ahead by 2%. Another poll from the Financial Times and the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business revealed that 44% of voters trust Trump with the economy, while 43% trust Harris, marking a change from previous results.

A New York Times and Siena College poll showed a tie at 48%-48%, with Trump catching up to Harris’s previous lead. A CNN poll also had the candidates tied at 47%-47% after showing Harris with a 1% lead earlier.

Luntz cautioned that Harris’s failure to provide more details about her plans could cost her the election, as voters want a clearer understanding of her platform.

While the early days of the Harris campaign were filled with joy and optimism, recent weeks have seen a shift towards sharper attacks on Trump, including warnings about the threat he poses to American democracy.

Former Trump administration officials labeling him as a fascist, which the Trump campaign denies, has led Harris to join in on the criticism as well.

According to 538’s polling analysis, Trump currently has a 53-in-100 chance of winning the election, compared to Harris’s 47-in-100 chance. A week ago, Trump was at 52, and three weeks ago, Harris was leading with a 58-in-100 chance.

Luntz refrains from making election forecasts and believes that uncommitted voters will play a crucial role in determining the outcome.

He stated, “I think at this moment, in terms of committed voters, Trump has the advantage. In terms of the potential vote ceiling, Harris has the edge, which is why I avoid making any projections. I just don’t know.”
