Recently, there has been a significant focus on mental health in K-12 education, with children facing various stressors both academically and socially. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 10-20 percent of children and adolescents worldwide experience mental health challenges, with depression being the most common. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reports that 80 percent of public schools in the US saw an increase in mental health needs following the COVID19 pandemic, but only 56 percent can effectively provide services. International Stress Awareness Day in November highlights the importance of managing stress effectively.
As urban educators, we play a crucial role in fostering a safe and emotionally healthy environment for our students. Addressing mental health needs is essential, with teachers able to promote well-being by integrating practices like mindfulness and social-emotional learning into the classroom. Monthly pet therapy sessions have been introduced at our school, resulting in a positive impact on our sixth-grade students.
During the first pet therapy session, there was a noticeable sense of community and shared joy among students and teachers. Smiles and laughter filled the room, creating a joyful atmosphere that lasted beyond the session. Students who don’t typically interact with each other bonded over the experience of petting the therapy dog, including those who struggle with peer interactions. The presence of the therapy dog also helped students remain calm and patient, displaying impressive self-control.
The therapy dog provided a safe space for students to overcome their fears and engage at their own pace. Beyond the social and emotional benefits, pet therapy has become an incentive for students to improve their behavior and responsibility in order to participate in future sessions. This positive reinforcement aligns with PBIS strategies and encourages self-discipline and self-awareness in a rewarding way.
The impact of pet therapy on our students has been profound, strengthening our sense of community and promoting emotional growth. We look forward to continuing this journey and exploring how pet therapy can support the emotional health of everyone involved.
