Public Education Neglected in Campaign, Yet Featured on Ballot

It is evident that education has been notably absent from the discussion in the Presidential campaign. Education is a crucial factor in creating a better life and society, serving as a pathway to progress.

The contrast between the two candidates is stark. Trump advocates for the dismantling of public education and the distribution of vouchers, while Harris is dedicated to providing funding for schools and universities.

Trump’s Project 2025 outlines his intentions to abolish the Department of Education and convert its funded programs, such as Title 1 and IDEA for students with disabilities, into unrestricted block grants for states. This would enable states to divert funding for other purposes. Simultaneously, the Trump administration aims to impose mandates on schools to prohibit the teaching of critical race theory, censor books, and enforce rightwing ideology in schools.

It is disappointing that the future of education was not addressed in the high-profile debates. The American people deserve to know that Kamala Harris aims to strengthen the country’s educational institutions, while Donald Trump seeks to undermine them.

Randi Weingarten penned an insightful article in Newsweek detailing the plans of each candidate. If you are unable to access it, you can try this link.
