Final Argument for Public Education Network

The Network for Public Education is the largest organization of parents, activists, educators, and students working to protect and enhance public education. In its 11th year, NPE collaborates with organizations in all states to oppose the privatization of public schools, advocate for their full funding, and support the professionals essential to their success.

NPE released the following statement regarding today’s election:

Earlier this year, the Board of Directors of the Network for Public Education Action endorsed Kamala Harris for President and Tim Walz for Vice President of the United States.

Our endorsement was not only a show of support for the Harris/Walz pro-public education platform but also a clear rejection of Donald J. Trump. The appointment of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education, a strong advocate for private school vouchers, during the Trump administration had a detrimental impact on public education. The consistent attempts to reduce federal education funding in various budget proposals were a cause for concern. Ms. DeVos’s willingness to undermine the Department of Education and public education itself was evident.

We understand that not all public school advocates may agree with our endorsements, and we acknowledge that there may be differing opinions on various issues among those who support public schools.

However, this year, we feel compelled to once again encourage all individuals, regardless of their political beliefs, to support the Harris/Walz ticket. The future of our children is at stake.

The hateful rhetoric targeting immigrants at rallies and even during the Presidential debate is deeply concerning. Regardless of one’s stance on immigration policy, the spread of hate and contempt will undoubtedly impact our schools, where millions of children from immigrant backgrounds are enrolled. This culture of hate not only affects how children perceive themselves and their peers but also normalizes hate speech.

Furthermore, the dissemination of false information by Trump, such as claims about children undergoing gender transition surgery at school and teachers “grooming” students, is part of a broader anti-public school agenda. These falsehoods not only anger and frighten parents but also erode their trust in educators and schools. They send a dangerous message to children that lying has no consequences and can even lead to the highest office in the country.

While some may view these lies, hate speech, and personal attacks as a typical part of political campaigns, we believe that electing Donald Trump will institutionalize hateful misinformation and personal attacks as a societal norm. We must not allow this to happen. We must strive to return to respectful discourse and disagreement.

The stakes go beyond funding and support for programs. Our children are observing. Our children are learning. They deserve to grow up in a society where tolerance and respect prevail, rather than the demonization of those who are culturally or racially different or hold differing viewpoints. For the sake of their emotional well-being and character development, we must put an end to Trumpism. We urge you to cast your vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz on November 5.
