ALAS Awards Lifetime Achievement to Carlos Garcia

Carlos Garcia has been named the recipient of the 2024-25 ALAS Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS). Garcia, a founding member of ALAS, was honored at a special awards ceremony during the ALAS Gala Dinner Event on October 11, 2024. ALAS Executive Director Ulysses Navarrete praised Garcia’s dedication and leadership in supporting historically marginalized students, particularly Latinos, throughout his 40-year career. Garcia, who served as a superintendent in four school districts before retiring in 2012, has been a key figure in promoting student achievement and narrowing the achievement gap.

Garcia’s passion for serving urban, underserved children stems from his own upbringing in a Los Angeles barrio. He has been recognized with numerous awards for his transformative leadership and commitment to equity and social justice in education. The ALAS awards also honored other education leaders, including Superintendent of the Year Dr. Debra Duardo and Principal of the Year Carlos Ramirez.

The ALAS National Education Summit, where the awards were presented, focuses on addressing challenges in the education system, particularly those affecting Latino students. The event provides a platform for administrators to engage in discussions and find solutions to improve education for all students. ALAS is dedicated to ensuring that every school effectively serves the educational needs of Latino and other historically marginalized youth.
