Sainsbury’s experiments with hybrid self-service tills for customers

A few stores are testing out “hybrid checkouts”, where a scanner is placed on a regular checkout to give customers more space for their larger items, according to the Grocery Gazette.

This new setup could be beneficial for those who prefer to self-scan their groceries and have more than just a few items.

Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts recently shared this information as part of the supermarket’s “Next Level” strategy with the Grocery Gazette.

Improving the checkout area to accommodate larger shopping trips with trolleys is one of the company’s “biggest challenges”.

Roberts clarified that removing manned checkouts doesn’t mean they will be completely eliminated, but rather providing customers with more payment options.

The “hybrid checkouts” are currently being tested in the Witney and Cobham stores in Oxfordshire before a decision is made to introduce them nationwide.
