Lucasfilm and X-Men writer collaborating on new Star Wars trilogy

Lucasfilm and X-Men’s Simon Kinberg are collaborating on a new Star Wars trilogy. The upcoming films are said to take place after the most recent trilogy that concluded with The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. The new trilogy is expected to introduce new characters and a fresh storyline, although the possibility of familiar faces making appearances has not been ruled out.

Simon Kinberg will be responsible for writing and producing the films, with a director yet to be announced. His previous works include writing for several X-Men movies, as well as The Martian, Deadpool, and Cinderella. He also served as a consultant on The Force Awakens in 2015.

Following the release of The Rise of Skywalker, which received mixed reviews and performed the lowest among the trilogy at the box office, various Star Wars projects have been announced and subsequently abandoned. These include projects from Marvel chief Kevin Feige and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins.

Another Star Wars film focusing on Daisy Ridley’s character Rey faced a setback when writer Steven Knight, known for Peaky Blinders, left the project. Ridley expressed her excitement for the new films, stating, “I feel like the new one/new ones will be so interesting. Time has passed and a lot has changed for me, personally, so it’ll be interesting to come back to someone who I know so well, but in such a different moment. For me to inhabit Rey again after all the time that we haven’t seen her, it’s actually scary, but it’s also exciting.”

Recent Star Wars stories have been primarily told through television series, including the recently cancelled shows The Acolyte and Ahsoka. Additionally, the upcoming series Skeleton Crew, led by Jude Law, is set to premiere in December.
