DePaul involves new students in cultural immersion opportunities

DePaul University in Illinois has a unique program called the Chicago Quarter, which is a required course for all incoming first-year students. This program aims to introduce students to the city of Chicago, its history, culture, and people through experiential learning excursions. The course is divided into two tracks: Discover Chicago and Explore Chicago. Discover Chicago involves a week-long immersion in the city before the start of classes, while Explore Chicago includes three field excursions throughout the academic year.

Students can choose from a variety of themes related to Chicago, such as art and architecture, literature and science, food, sports, social justice, spirituality, ethnic identity, music and theater, business and industry, or politics. The course is designed to help students feel connected to the university and the city, as many students choose DePaul because of its location in Chicago.

Faculty instructors, staff members, and peer mentors lead the courses, providing academic instruction as well as supplemental curriculum on transitioning to college, connecting to the university mission, and building self-belief. Common Hour sessions include information sessions, discussions, activities, and workshops to enhance the students’ learning experience.

One unique aspect of the Chicago Quarter program is the emphasis on experiential learning and community engagement. Students participate in activities that allow them to explore different parts of the city and reflect on their experiences. The program also includes a service day where students volunteer with local organizations related to their course topics.

The small class sizes of up to 22 students in Discover Chicago and 28 students in Explore Chicago allow for more personalized interactions and deeper connections among students. The program has received positive feedback from seniors, who consider the Chicago Quarter as one of their most memorable classes and a place where they formed lasting friendships across different academic programs.
