Denison Witmer has collaborated with Sufjan Stevens on a new single titled ‘Older and Free’. Stevens took on the role of producer for the track, which is now available for listening below.
“One of the advantages of growing older and gaining self-awareness is the ability to seek out things that help you reset when things feel out of balance,” Witmer shared in a statement. “For me, alone time is crucial. Connecting with nature is essential. Engaging in physical activity and getting lost in my thoughts has become a necessity – whether it’s through running or, as was the case with this song, hiking. I wrote ‘Older and Free’ during a solo camping trip at French Creek State Park, not far from my home in Pennsylvania.”
“During the Covid lockdown, my wife and I realized that we needed to take time for ourselves to prevent burnout from the daily responsibilities we faced,” he continued. “The melody and lyrics of the song came to me while hiking the Lenape Trail back to my campsite. I usually carry a small classical guitar with me wherever I go, and I was able to complete the song that evening. I became so attached to the sound of the guitar that it ended up being the instrument used for recording the basic tracks.”
