Blinken calls for end to Middle East violence amid Israeli airstrikes on historic Lebanese port city: Reuters

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called for a cessation of hostilities between Israel and the militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah. However, Israeli airstrikes on the historic Lebanese port city of Tyre have shown that the fighting continues unabated.

Israel began bombing Tyre shortly after ordering residents to evacuate central areas. Thick smoke filled the air as residential buildings were targeted.

Tens of thousands of people had already fled Tyre as Israel escalates its efforts to dismantle Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, both of which are supported by Iran.

The port city of Tyre, usually bustling with activity, has now become a target of Israeli attacks, forcing residents to flee, including those living near the ancient castle.

There are concerns among Lebanese citizens that their country could face a situation similar to Gaza, where Israeli strikes have caused significant casualties and destruction.

In Gaza, Israeli airstrikes have intensified following the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. Health authorities reported at least 20 people killed in the recent strikes, mostly in the northern part of the territory.

Blinken, who is on a trip to the Middle East, is seeking to facilitate peace talks in the region. His visit comes amidst escalating tensions between Israel and the Palestinian militant groups.

Israel has confirmed the deaths of three Hezbollah commanders and around 70 fighters in southern Lebanon in the past two days. The Israeli military also announced the killing of Hashem Safieddine, a top Hezbollah leader.

Blinken emphasized the need for Israel to translate its military successes into a lasting strategic achievement, focusing on the safe return of hostages, ending the conflict, and planning for post-war recovery.

While there are hopes for peace following the death of Sinwar, the situation on the ground remains volatile, with Gaza facing continued Israeli assaults and Lebanon witnessing widespread displacement and casualties.

The United Nations Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA reported the death of one of its staff members in Gaza, along with other civilian casualties in the region. In Lebanon, the Israeli offensive has displaced over a million people and resulted in thousands of deaths.
