Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis focused on the high-stakes abortion amendment in Florida, calling it a “bait and switch.”

Amendment 4, which aims to end Florida’s six-week abortion ban by enshrining abortion in the state’s constitution, has been a key issue as Election Day approaches.

During a press conference on Tuesday at the Grove Bible Chapel in Winter Garden, DeSantis, along with nearly a dozen doctors, urged voters to vote “No” on the abortion amendment.

“When people actually peel back the onion and see what this amendment is, they don’t like it,” he said. “And it loses a lot of support.”

DeSantis criticized the vague language of the amendment, pointing out that it could potentially allow elective abortion throughout a woman’s pregnancy as deemed necessary by employees of abortion clinics, rather than just doctors.

The amendment also fails to define viability, typically understood to be around 20 to 25 weeks, according to DeSantis.

DeSantis also raised concerns about the lack of definition for “health care provider” in the amendment, stating that it could allow nonmedical doctors to perform abortions.

He also criticized the amendment’s impact on parental rights, specifically regarding minors getting abortions.

Trump and Harris have differing views on abortion, with Trump shifting his stance during the election cycle and Harris advocating for restoring national abortion rights.
